Promoting Inclusive Employment in Massachusetts

What is Employment First?

Employment First is a national systems change framework that emphasizes the importance of competitive integrated employment for people with disabilities. Competitive integrated employment means that people with disabilities should have the same opportunities as everyone else to work in jobs that pay competitive wages in typical work settings.

Employment First acts as a guide for employment professionals who support people with disabilities find and maintain community-based jobs. People with disabilities who receive services from Massachusetts DDS can access career planning, job coaching, job development, and transition support, which can help support the journey to competitive integrated employment.

Employment First is also about advocating for inclusive hiring practices and improving access to employment for people with disabilities. Priorities include person-centered planning, self-determination, and informed choice. Through activities like developing relationships with businesses in the community, providing disability awareness trainings to employers, and encouraging the use of natural supports, employment professionals can encourage businesses to recognize the value of people with disabilities and inclusive workplaces.

By recognizing the importance of work in people's lives and striving to increase access to competitive jobs, Employment First is paving the way for a brighter future in Massachusetts where everyone can contribute their skills and talents in their community.

Employment services providers also work in partnership with organizations that aim to create a more inclusive workforce. To learn more about these partners, view our page on Partners in Employment First.
